7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trekking
A scenic, varied trail known for excellent acclimatization and dramatic views.
A scenic, varied trail known for excellent acclimatization and dramatic views.
The 7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the “Whiskey Route,” Machame takes you through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and the spectacular high-altitude landscapes surrounding Kibo Peak.
Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame uses mountain camps and tents, giving trekkers a more immersive wilderness experience. The route also follows a valuable acclimatization principle: “climb high, sleep low,” particularly around the Barranco and Karanga sections.
With seven days on the mountain, this itinerary provides a good balance between trekking, acclimatization and summit preparation, making it a popular choice for adventurous first-time and experienced trekkers.
Elevation: 1,800m to 3,000m
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Machame Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate.
After registration and meeting your mountain crew, you begin hiking through the lush rainforest on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The trail is surrounded by tall trees, dense vegetation, moss and birds. The first section can be relatively muddy, particularly during wet conditions, so good waterproof hiking boots are recommended.
Your guide will maintain a comfortable “pole pole” pace to help you conserve energy and begin adapting to the altitude.
After several hours of hiking, you reach Machame Camp, where your crew will have prepared your tent and dinner.
Enjoy your first evening on the mountain before resting for the night.
Elevation: 3,000m to 3,840m
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira Camp
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and begin climbing into the moorland zone.
The trail becomes steeper as you ascend along rocky ridges. The vegetation gradually becomes shorter, opening up spectacular views across the mountain landscape.
As you approach Shira Plateau, the terrain becomes more expansive, with impressive views of Kibo rising above the surrounding landscape.
After reaching Shira Camp, you will have time to rest, enjoy the scenery and acclimatize to the increasing altitude.
On a clear evening, the views across the plateau can be spectacular.
Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m to 3,960m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert / Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the trek.
You leave Shira Camp and gradually climb toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres.
The higher elevation may make the hike feel more challenging. However, after spending some time at Lava Tower, you descend toward Barranco Camp — following the important acclimatization principle of “climb high, sleep low.”
The landscape changes dramatically as you enter the alpine desert zone.
Eventually, the impressive Barranco Wall comes into view.
Barranco Camp is situated beneath this dramatic volcanic formation and offers one of the most memorable camping locations on Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you begin the day with the famous Barranco Wall.
Although it looks intimidating from camp, the climb is not a technical rock climb. With the assistance of your experienced guide, you carefully make your way up the wall using established sections of the trail.
Once at the top, you are rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
The trail then continues across a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.
This is a shorter trekking day, giving you valuable time to rest and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Today you make your way toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt.
The trail gradually climbs across a stark alpine landscape with little vegetation. As the altitude increases, your walking pace will become slower.
Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, and the camp is positioned high on the mountain with dramatic views toward Kibo and Mawenzi.
After arriving at camp, you will have an early dinner and receive a briefing from your guide about the summit attempt.
Prepare your clothing, headlamp, water and other equipment before getting as much rest as possible.
You will wake around midnight for the final ascent.
Elevation: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert / Rainforest
Overnight: Mweka Camp
This is the summit day and the most demanding part of your Kilimanjaro trek.
You wake around midnight and begin your ascent in darkness, following your guide toward the crater rim.
The trail becomes increasingly steep as you climb over volcanic scree toward Stella Point at approximately 5,739 metres.
After reaching Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim toward the summit.
Eventually, you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Take time to celebrate your achievement and capture photographs at the summit.
Standing above the clouds at the Roof of Africa is an unforgettable experience.
After the summit, you begin your descent toward Barafu Camp before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
The descent to lower elevation is important after spending several hours at extreme altitude.
You will arrive at Mweka Camp tired but proud of your achievement.
Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest.
The trail becomes increasingly green as you lose altitude. Enjoy the final views and reflect on your journey from the foothills of Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak.
After approximately three to four hours, you arrive at Mweka Gate.
Your guide will complete the final registration procedures and you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate.
Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
