8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trekking

A quieter western approach with gradual ascent and spectacular wilderness.

Overview

The 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trek is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Starting from the quieter western side of the mountain, the Lemosho Route offers beautiful wilderness, dramatic landscapes and an excellent acclimatization profile.

This 8-day itinerary gives you more time to adapt to the increasing altitude while crossing several of Kilimanjaro’s unique ecological zones. From the lush rainforest and remote Shira Plateau to the spectacular Barranco Wall and the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, every stage of the journey offers something special.

The route is ideal for trekkers who want a scenic, less crowded approach and a strong balance between acclimatization, adventure and summit success.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 2,100m to 2,780m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After completing the park registration and meeting your professional mountain crew, you begin your trek through the lush rainforest.

The first day is relatively short, allowing you to ease into the trek and begin adjusting to the altitude. The forest is home to a variety of plants and birdlife, creating a peaceful introduction to the mountain.

After several hours, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where your crew will have prepared your campsite.

Enjoy dinner and your first night in the Kilimanjaro wilderness.

Elevation: 2,780m to 3,505m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, you continue your ascent as the rainforest gradually gives way to the moorland zone.

The trail becomes more open, revealing expansive views of the surrounding landscape. You will notice a dramatic change in vegetation as giant heathers and other high-altitude plants replace the dense forest.

As you climb higher, Kibo Peak begins to dominate the horizon.

The trail eventually leads onto the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most beautiful areas of the Lemosho Route.

You arrive at Shira 1 Camp in the afternoon and have time to relax, explore the surroundings and enjoy the mountain views.

Elevation: 3,505m to approximately 4,200m
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert
Overnight: Moir Camp

Today you continue across the impressive Shira Plateau.

The trail passes through a spectacular high-altitude landscape with wide views of Kibo, the Western Breach and surrounding volcanic formations.

After passing through the Shira area, you gradually ascend toward Moir Camp, situated at approximately 4,200 metres.

This is an important acclimatization day because you climb to a higher altitude before spending the night there.

Your guide will monitor your condition throughout the day and maintain a slow, steady pace.

Spend the evening relaxing at camp and enjoying the remote atmosphere of the mountain.

Elevation: 4,200m → 4,630m → 3,960m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barranco Camp

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of your trek.

You leave Moir Camp and continue toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres.

The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you enter the alpine desert zone.

After reaching Lava Tower, the trail descends toward Barranco Camp. This follows the valuable acclimatization principle of “climb high, sleep low.”

As you descend, the spectacular Barranco Wall comes into view.

Barranco Camp sits beneath the imposing wall and is widely regarded as one of the most scenic campsites on Kilimanjaro.

Enjoy dinner and rest well before tomorrow’s climb.

Elevation: 3,960m to 4,035m
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Karanga Camp

After breakfast, you begin the day by tackling the famous Barranco Wall.

Although the wall looks dramatic from below, the route is not a technical rock climb. Your experienced guide will help you navigate the rocky sections safely.

Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic landscape.

The trail then winds through valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp.

This is a relatively short trekking day, giving you plenty of time to rest and prepare for the final stages of the climb.

Elevation: 4,035m to 4,640m
Distance: Approximately 4 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Barafu Camp

Today you climb toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before summit night.

The trail crosses a stark alpine landscape with little vegetation. The higher altitude makes the hike more physically demanding, so your guide will maintain a slow pace.

After reaching Barafu Camp, you will receive a briefing about the summit attempt.

Take time to organize your summit equipment, prepare your clothing and refill your water.

Dinner is served early, and you should try to get as much rest as possible.

The summit attempt begins around midnight.

Elevation: 4,640m → 5,895m → 3,100m
Distance: Approximately 17 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert / Rainforest
Overnight: Mweka Camp

This is the summit day — the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

You wake around midnight and begin climbing through the darkness toward the crater rim.

The trail becomes progressively steeper as you make your way over volcanic scree toward Stella Point at approximately 5,739 metres.

After reaching Stella Point, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak – 5,895m

At approximately 5,895 metres, you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy the incredible views from the Roof of Africa.

After spending time at the summit, you begin the long descent toward Barafu Camp before continuing to Mweka Camp.

Descending to a lower altitude is an important part of the summit day, and reaching Mweka Camp provides a welcome opportunity to rest.

Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest.

The trail becomes increasingly green as you lose altitude, and the warmer air feels noticeably different from the high-altitude environment of the summit.

After approximately three to four hours, you reach Mweka Gate.

Your guide will complete the final park procedures and you will receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate.

Your driver will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Your 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Trekking adventure comes to an end.

End of Trek.
