7-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trekking

The classic hut-to-hut trail and the mountain’s most direct approach.

Overview

The 7-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek is an excellent choice for hikers looking for a gradual ascent, comfortable mountain huts, and more time to acclimatize before reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro and approaches the mountain from the southeast.

Unlike most Kilimanjaro routes, which use tents, Marangu provides overnight accommodation in mountain huts with shared sleeping facilities. This 7-day itinerary adds an extra acclimatization day, giving your body more time to adjust to the increasing altitude and improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet).

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight: Mandara Hut

Your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate, where you will complete registration and meet your mountain crew.

Once ready, you begin hiking through the lush rainforest toward Mandara Hut. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, tropical vegetation and birds, while occasional glimpses of wildlife may add to the experience.

The hike is relatively gentle, allowing you to settle into the rhythm of walking at altitude. Your guide will encourage you to maintain a slow and steady pace — “pole pole” — which is essential for successful acclimatization.

After reaching Mandara Hut, you will have time to rest, enjoy dinner and prepare for your first night on the mountain.

Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Overnight: Horombo Hut

After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue through the beautiful moorland zone.

The landscape gradually changes as giant heather plants, grasses and volcanic scenery replace the dense forest. With clear weather, you may get your first impressive views of Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro.

The trail continues steadily uphill toward Horombo Hut at 3,720 metres. This is where the altitude becomes more noticeable, so maintaining a slow pace and drinking plenty of water is important.

Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.

Elevation: 3,720m
Hiking: Optional acclimatization hike
Overnight: Horombo Hut

Today is dedicated to acclimatization.

Rather than climbing higher and sleeping at a higher elevation, you will take an acclimatization hike around the Horombo area before returning to the same hut for the night.

Depending on weather and your guide’s recommendation, you may hike toward Zebra Rocks or another nearby higher point. The goal is to expose your body to higher altitude while returning to sleep at 3,720 metres.

This extra day is one of the major advantages of the 7-day itinerary. It allows your body more time to adapt to the reduced oxygen levels before the more demanding sections of the climb.

Spend the evening relaxing at Horombo Hut, enjoying dinner and preparing for the journey toward Kibo.

Elevation: 3,720m to 4,703m
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Overnight: Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you begin the long trek toward Kibo Hut, the final overnight stop before summit night.

The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail crosses the Saddle, a broad area between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

This section can feel challenging because of the altitude, even though the terrain itself is not technically difficult. Walk slowly and follow your guide’s instructions.

Upon arrival at Kibo Hut, you will have an early dinner and prepare your equipment for the summit attempt.

Try to rest as much as possible because you will wake up during the night for the final ascent.

Elevation: 4,703m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Distance: Approximately 22 km
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic
Overnight: Horombo Hut

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

You will wake around midnight and begin your summit attempt under the stars.

The trail climbs slowly toward Gilman’s Point at 5,681 metres, with the terrain becoming steeper and more demanding. Your guide will set a very slow pace to conserve energy.

After reaching Gilman’s Point, you continue around the crater rim toward Stella Point and then along the summit ridge toward Uhuru Peak.

Uhuru Peak – 5,895m

Standing at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is an unforgettable achievement.

Take time to celebrate, photograph the incredible surroundings and enjoy the feeling of standing on the Roof of Africa.

After the summit, you descend toward Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.

Although the descent is physically demanding, reaching lower altitude usually brings noticeable relief.

Elevation: 3,720m to 2,700m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Rainforest
Overnight: Mandara Hut

After breakfast, you begin your descent toward Mandara Hut.

The landscape gradually changes as you move from the moorland back into the lush rainforest.

This is a much easier day compared with the summit day, giving you an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and reflect on your Kilimanjaro achievement.

Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon, where you will enjoy dinner and your final night on the mountain.

Elevation: 2,700m to 1,860m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the beautiful Kilimanjaro rainforest.

The trail is mostly downhill and should take approximately three to four hours. Once you reach Marangu Gate, you will complete the necessary exit procedures and receive your summit certificate.

Your driver will then meet you at the gate and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Your 7-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trekking adventure comes to an end with memories that will last a lifetime.

End of Trek.
